At this time of year, individuals and companies and charities are all looking at year end charitable giving. It is excellent to give to charities, but be sure you know who you are giving it to.
There are several web sites you can use to check out a charity before you give your hard-earned money to it. They are listed below:
www.give.org (this is the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance web site)
Look for charities that spend less than 25% on overhead.
Be careful of charities that have names very similar to well-known charities.
Make sure the organization has an 501(c)(3) status. Churches automatically have that status.
Tell them you do not want them to sell or give your name to other charities, or you could end up getting a lot of unwanted calls and mail.
Instead of giving through someone who calls you, who gets paid for doing the soliciting, give directly to the charity.
